Whenever the vehicles are to be detected in a parking lot, loop detectors are used. The detectors are used for monitoring and provide the vehicles with safeguarding access for counting them. These detectors are also commonly known as single channel inductive-loop traffic detectors. It can detect, monitor, and count vehicles arriving or passing at a certain point. The output signal of these detectors is used to control the door and gate drive mechanism of a parking area, operate automatic barriers, and control the traffic light system of a parking bay. It can also classify the types of vehicles, based on their body types.

Installation Techniques:

Single channel loop detectors create an inductance from a magnetic field to sense the vehicle’s movement and increase access control. These detectors are installed in asphalt or concrete cement pavement. The process includes:

  • Cutting slot area.
  • Clean and dry the slot.
  • Laying in the loop detector wires.
  • Seal the cutting area.
  • Connecting the loop detector wire to the lead-in cable.
  • The terminal strip in the cabinet needs to be connected with the cable.
  • It has to be ensured that the harness connects the terminal strip to the electronics unit.

Installation Specifications:

There is some more information you need to know about before the installation of single channel loop detectors.

Loop & Feeder Specification:

The loop must have insulated wire with a copper cross-sectional area equivalent to a minimum of 1.5  Square mm. The feeder must also be made of the same material with 20 twists per meter.  The screened cable needs to be used for long loop feeders. The joints are required to be soldered in a waterproof joint bow for ensuring reliable detector performance.

Sensing Loop Geometry:

Sensing loops should be rectangular in shape and must be installed at the right angles to the traffic moment direction. The length of the loop needs to be determined by the width of the roadway to be monitored. The loops need to be installed with the longest sides and these sides should be 1 meter apart ideally.

Loop Installation:

In order to cut the slot area, it is advisable to cut them with masonry cutting discs or similar devices. To reduce the chances of damage, a 45-degree crosscut should be made across the loop corners. It is also necessary to cut a slot from a loop circumference at one corner of the loop to accommodate the feeder.
